Energy Medicine – Our Healthy Instincts

We are all born with the birthright to heal ourselves, and an amazing ability to activate our healing potentials. The body’s marvelous subtle energies are always valiantly nudging us towards healing.

For instance, when you feel upset, do you ever hold your forehead with your hand? This healing touch is exponentially expanded if you leave your hand there, with a light touch, and remain in this position for at least 3 minutes. The stressor thoughts lose their emotional charge as you consciously hold these points and breathe.

When you feel pain in your body, do you hold or rub it? This instinct begins to bring healing to the area right away. You can take this to another level by lifting your hand off the area of pain a couple of inches, and tracing slow counter-clockwise circles with your open palm over the pain for a few minutes. End with “drawing” figure 8 patterns above the painful area.

Learn more Energy Medicine! Find out how to assist your body’s healing efficiency, awakening your natural restorative energies. Come join me at my Healthy Hearts class at Lotus Yoga in Apopka on Saturday the 12th.  Next month, I’ll be teaching a class about Energy Testing and offering an Energy Dance experience. I’d love to see you there!

Fountain of Light – the Zip Up

 Awareness:  The Central Meridian, the Yin half of the Hook Up, is also regarded as the self-suggestion meridian.  (Please see my article, Body Symphony, the Hook Up.)  It holds the vibrations of how we perceive ourselves.  When we speak aloud the qualities we choose to nurture while tracing it forward, the Central meridian energy force amplifies and anchors these intentions.  It links into the part of us where, whatever we desire, it is already ours.

Practice:  I design a phrase that describes what I choose to instill in my energies, affirming and feeling the qualities I would like to flourish in my being.  I word it so that those aspects of my wider self are claimed fully in the present moment of my experiential self, as in, “I am ….”   I breathe the words and feelings of this quality, and blow them with light and sound into my hands.  Then I pour this light from my hands, tracing a few inches from my body, from pubic bone to lower lip, three or four times.  On the last sweep, I continue my hands upwards, and turning palms down when my hands are extended above my head, then I slowly exhale and arc my hands to my sides like a fountain.

Mindful Focus:

I am filled with love, vibrant well-being, and kindness.

Love fills my every cell and shines through me.

I am love, vibrant well-being, and kindness.

Warmly,

Lyn

Body Symphony – the Hook Up

Awareness:  The Central Meridian travels from the pubic bone to the lower lip, and the Governing Meridian begins at the tailbone and travels up the spine, over the head to the upper lip.  They are designed to connect at the back of the throat and create a vibrant cycling of life force around and through the body, bringing strength and resiliency to all the other energy systems. When this connection is disturbed by stresses of various sorts, the integrity of the whole being is affected.  I see the Hook Up like an orchestra that tunes up all its instruments – its energy flows and systems – and plays them to produce fine music, following the core thread of one melody, sung by the primary connection of these two energy pathways.

MarcoSunset
Marco Island Sunset by Lyn Milum

Practice:  There are different ways to encourage the Hook Up connection.  Donna Eden teaches to place the middle finger of one hand in the navel and the other between the eyebrows, press in, pull up, and breathe deeply for 30 seconds or more.  She recommends this Hook Up as part of her Daily Energy Routine.

One of the ways I also like to reinforce the hook up between Central and Governing meridians is to work with several key points along these energy pathways.  First, I place a finger or two of one hand in my navel, press in and tug upwards, while I rest some fingertips (or the palm) of my other hand on my sacrum.  I breathe and envision the rosy light glowing up the Central channel, and bright golden light shining up the Governing channel, meeting at the back of my throat.  I wait til I feel a sigh, a yawn or other sign of connection, and move the hand that was on my sacrum to the hollow at the base of my skull, called the “power point,” keeping the other finger in my navel.  I let the connection become strong, wait for a sign of connection, then move fingertips to the crown of my head while moving the other to the center of my chest, over the heart chakra.  When I feel ready, I move the fingertips from my crown to between my eyebrows, and again rest the other fingertip in my navel, pressing in and tugging up with both fingers.  Sometimes I enjoy singing a tone, or sounding the “Om” while holding these points, and often I speak my intentions with mindful focus.

I finish by tracing a celtic knot of figure 8s at my lips, tying together Governing and Central meridians with threads of light.

Mindful Focus:

My light shines clear and strong.

I am centered in the confidence of my essential self.

I am grounded in strength and courage.

All of my energies join in a unified harmony of song.

Warmly,

Lyn

A Cloak of Shining Dragonflies – the Celtic Weave

Awareness: An intricate interweaving of figure 8 patterns, or infinity patterns ∞, large and small, dances our energy systems together and is an energy system of its own that Donna Eden calls “the Celtic Weave.” She also teaches an exercise by that name that restores and reinforces the fabric of the auric field, the boundary and space extending around the entire body that intelligently draws in energies and influences that we welcome, and filters out unwanted energies coming our way. Her Celtic Weave exercise can be found in her book, Energy Medicine. The exercise I share here is a free-style version I like to use.

 Practice: I invigorate the weave of my aura in different ways. One of my favorites is to gently swing my arms above my head, and imagine the light shining from my hands while painting them back and forth, crossing my midline, swinging out, like an intertwining strand of DNA, from head to feet. I breathe in through my nose, out through my mouth, in a deep and relaxed way. I keep my knees soft and bounce a bit when my hands cross and when they round the outside of the turn. This looks a bit like conducting an orchestra, but slower, so I can feel the silky sensation of my auric field. I weave down the front of my body, then spread my arms wide to trace my sides, front to back. I reach around and send the weave across the back of my body. Dragonflies can be drawn using only “8s” – a big one for the body, a small “infinity” for the eyes, and two long ones crossing the body become the wings. While doing the Celtic Weave practice, I love to imagine shining life force “dragonflies” pouring out from the core of my being, weaving the integrity of my true wellness through every cell and structure as they travel to the outside of my aura, my energy field. At the outer edge they become a luminous humming cloak, a shining fabric of light.

Mindful Focus: Infinities of dancing 8’s weave harmony through me … From my DNA, to my cells, my muscles, My organs, my bones, my whole body, My entire energy universe. I am in my integrity, and in loving connection with all Life.

Warmly, Lyn

Separating and Connecting Heaven & Earth

Awareness:  Like mental activity that gets caught in the head (released by the Crown Pull, see below for that article), static energy can become trapped in the joints.  Energy is dynamic and fluid, and we feel best when it is in motion, bringing in fresh supplies of life force, moving freely through all our structures and systems, and releasing in appropriate balance with receiving.  Not only does this exercise move stuck energies from the joints, but it is a way of opening up space to hold the uniqueness of our life.  An ancient Qi Gong exercise, it was known as Separating Heaven & Earth, carving out and claiming space for expressing our unique fullness.  As Connecting Heaven & Earth, it’s a way of calling in what we desire from the abundance of the Universe. I appreciate Barbara Ann O’Leary and Melanie Smith for expanding my understanding of this exercise.

  Maine  scene
photo of Mt. Desert Island, by Lyn Milum

Practice:

1.  I stand with my hands on my thighs, fingers spread.

2.  With a deep inhalation through the nose, I circle my arms out, bringing my hands to meet at my heart, fingers touching in a “prayer” position.  I exhale through my mouth.

3.   Inhaling through my nose, I look up and stretch one hand high above my head with my wrist at a 90 degree angle, as if pushing the ceiling above me.  I stretch the other hand with my arm straight down, flattening my hand, wrist bent at 90 degrees.  I hold this position while holding my breath, as long as is comfortable.

4.  Releasing my breath through my mouth, I return my hands to the prayer position at my heart.  I then repeat, switching the arm that raises and the one that lowers.  I do at least one or more additional stretches on each side.

5.  Coming out of the pose as I bring my arm down, I allow my body to fold over at the waist.  I relax there with my knees slightly bent as I take a few deep breaths.

6.  Slowly returning to standing position, I swing my arms in a wide sideways figure 8 pattern, and end with a backward roll of my shoulders.

Mindful Focus:

Separating Heaven and Earth

I envision the rapid and thorough release of any distress or discomfort as I stretch one hand above, and one below.

I release: (name what I choose to let go of)

Or, I feel space opening up to welcome the full expression of my essential self.

I claim the life I took birth for, and my essential self expands within me.

Connecting Heaven and Earth

I call for and claim what I desire from the infinite supply, as I reach a hand above and a hand below.  I gratefully receive what is freely given.

I call in and welcome: (name what qualities I choose to bring in)

Another mindfulness affirmation:

I touch into Divine love and care (looking up while holding the breath)

I expand all of who I am into my life (looking down while exhaling)

Bend and hang from waist, breathe deeply 3 times

I surrender to the wisdom within

Slowly straighten up, tracing figure 8 patterns

I integrate my Self, my Source, and the Life I Live.

What does it feel like to do this exercise with the intention to separate, carve space, release what doesn’t serve?  What does it feel like with the focus of making a sacred connection and receiving divine gifts?  Right now, I’m dancing with both of the ideas, flowing with what’s coming up for me.

Warmly,   Lyn

A Meridian Tonic – Neurolymphatic Reflex Massage

Awareness: Firmly massaging the Neurolymphatic Reflex points on this chart moves toxins from the meridians they relate to, and from the organs the meridians are named for.  As static energy toxins are triggered to release, fresh energy naturally flows in to restore our innate harmonious states of wellness.  This feels like an all-over body tonic to me.

NLs Man

Practice:  With one or two fingertips, I press in and firmly massage each point with small circular motions for a few seconds each.  The ones that feel the most tender are moving the most toxins out through the lymph system.  If health is compromised or there is tenderness in many points, I find it helps to just massage a few each day, rotating through the whole set over several days.  Over time, they tend to feel less sore. I spend a few seconds on each one and a bit longer on points when I find ones that are tender.  It is important to drink plenty of water after working Neurolymphatic Reflex points to help the lymph system to flush the toxins that were released.

Mindful Focus: I love to use Susan Shanley‘s meridian tracing affirmations while clearing points that are particularly tender.  For instance, while clearing the K-27 Neurolymphatics (the same points referenced in the Four Thumps) I might say Susan’s Kidney Meridian affirmation: “I step forward with courage.”

Sometimes I focus on a simple chant while clearing each point or set of points:

Stir and clear

Renew and flow

Release, rebalance,

Letting go

I like to clear my Neurolymphatic Reflex Points as part of my daily “energy hygiene,”  washing away imbalances in the meridians that are ready to move.  Clearing these points every day helps keep balanced meridians in good shape, and takes some of the pressure off any struggling meridians.

Warmly,  Lyn

Inspiration’s Window – The Crown Pull

Awareness:  I think, work at the computer, read, plan, imagine, analyze, ruminate … and all of these things bring energy up to my head.  Doing the Crown Pull opens the exit for static energetic clutter that can build up in the head from mental activity, making room for the light of fresh inspiration to pour in.

CrystalmeditationVisAlchCrystal Meditation used with permission from Visual Alchemy

Practice:  I curl my fingertips and rest them on my forehead, along the midline.  I like to rest my fingertips for a few moments, envisioning light shining from my fingers all the way into the inner structures, and then press in and pull firmly apart to the temples.  I  breathe in when pressing, and exhale while pulling apart and widening.  I continue pouring rays of light from my fingertips, and the breathing rhythm, pressing in, and pulling apart, following the midline of the head over the scalp, portion by portion, until reaching my neck.  I rake my fingers from beside my neck vertebrae outwards, then let them hang on my shoulders, letting any tension stored there melt away.  Then I release and relax my hands and arms.

Mindful Focus:

The ripples of my thinking become still

My guidance flows to me with clarity

Thoughts dissolve into a peaceful ocean

Reflecting sacred unity

I sometimes feel better when I do two Crown Pulls in a series.  It’s one of the practices that helps me fall asleep faster at night, when my mind is active and my body is weary.  I want to open myself to inspiration when slipping into dreamtime, when I feel conflicted and long for guidance, and when I feel creatively “flat.”  I love the restful stillness I can feel after doing the Crown Pull.

Vibrant Communications: Cross-Lateral Patterning and Neurological Organizing

Awareness:  Our vitality suffers when information is not crossing from the right hemisphere of the brain to the left side of the body and vice versa. Communication among energy systems can become cacophonous when neurological signals are scrambled (disturbance that can be restored by doing Donna Eden’s Wayne Cook exercise).  Scrambled signals and energies struggling to crossover the midline of the body are often the result of ongoing daily stress responses.  Restoring the crossover patterns and neurological organization clears communication between energy systems, and helps us access our vast potential for self-healing and renewal.

Laurel Camden (Eden Energy Medicine Certification Program Faculty member and Advanced Practitioner) teaches a way to re-establish the crossover patterns of the body by tracing sideways figure 8s on the face around the eyes. I find that the following adaptation of that exercise tends to provide the benefits of both the Homolateral Correction and the Wayne Cook exercise that are part of Donna Eden’s Daily Energy Routine.  This works well for me, and many I work with, and if it doesn’t help enough I try other methods to invite balance.

FlowerofLife2VisAlch
Flower of Life II, used with permission, by Visual Alchemy

Practice:

1.  Sitting or standing, I cross my ankles, rest one hand on my opposite hip, and with my other hand I use my first and second fingers to gently trace slow figure eights from the point between my eyes, up around one eyebrow, under and around the eye, crossing between the eyebrows again and continuing up and around the other side.  I trace several figure 8s while breathing in a slow, deep and relaxed way, in through the nose and out through the mouth.  It feels very centering to keep my attention on the sensation of my fingertips where they touch my face.

2.  For the last several patterns, I widen the 8 pattern, keeping the center crossing point of the eight between the eyes, and the outside curve travels from the top of the ear, close behind the ear, and back under the eyes to the center.  This has the effect of engaging Triple Warmer, the fight-flight warrior meridian, to lend its powerful ability to set this harmonious repatterning as a new habit.

3.  Then I repeat the exercise with ankles crossed the other way, my other hand crossing to rest on the other hip, and my free hand tracing the figure eight patterns.  It feels more potent when I breathe deeply and easily, and relax all muscles that are not being used to trace the 8s.

Mindful Focus:

My inner physician brings wisdom and infinite resources for my joyful well-being.

My mind is at peace with order and clarity.

My thinking is calm focused and clear.

Happiness blooms within my heart.

Peace spreads throughout my being.

Vibrant Communications arose when working with someone who had limited mobility in one arm.  I suggested trying this, synthesizing it as I went, and it was nice how quickly it restored crossover patterning as well as the Wayne Cook exercise effects, just doing it with one side (without repeating the set using the other hand).  Another person remarked that, after doing a couple of minutes of this exercise, she felt more deeply relaxed than she had all day, even after meditating.

I feel a lot of deep sighs when I use the Vibrant Communications exercise, my signal that energies are shifting and settling into harmony. I’m not suggesting this to always replace the Homolateral Correction or the Wayne Cook exercises, because they work wonders … I’m sharing something I found that might be useful as well.

Warmly,   Lyn

Knocking on Energy’s Doors – The Four Thumps

There are potent points on the body that are portals into our energy systems, doorways  that open deeply into the life force and interrelate with all other body energies.  We can interact with these points by stimulating them with circular massage, holding our fingertips on them, and tapping or thumping to awaken and revitalize them.  Attention to specific energies evokes their response and enlivening.  When these doors open, the whole system is more receptive to shifting into greater balance.

Kidney-27 Points

Awareness: The Kidney Meridian brings up electromagnetic life force from the Earth to nourish and renew our own.  It begins on the soles of the feet and travels to the chest, where it stimulates the flow of vitality throughout the meridian system.

Practice:  We locate these endpoints of the Kidney meridian by following the collarbones to their inner corners, and drop under and just to the outside of these points.  Deeply rub and/or tap the points with the fingertips.

Mindful Focus:

I draw up from the Earth the spirit of life,

Through the soles of my feet,

Filling each cell with light.

I step forward into each moment with courage and vitality.

I am renewed and strong.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thymus Gland
Awareness:  The thymus gland is a primary part of our immune system, creating white blood cells that eliminate pathogens.  The immune system’s creative ability to isolate and remove what is not harmonious with our health is a beautiful metaphor for sorting through what seems to make us who we are, and discovering our most genuine self within.
Practice: Tap or rub the center of the sternum, or hold fingertips over this point about 3″ or 4″ below the collarbones in the center of the chest.  The thymus gland lives behind this doorway point.
Mindful Focus:
My immune system recognizes and supports my true self.
It is intelligent, strong, and resilient.
As I shed all that is not-me,
My authentic Self has more space to express through me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Spleen Meridian Points

Awareness: The Spleen Meridian acts as our grand metabolizer, processing what we eat, our thoughts, our reactions to experiences, and our emotions.  The Yin aspect of the Earth Element, Spleen helps us to feel we belong in our lives on this Earth, in the home of our bodies, and that life is beautiful.

Practice:  In a line between the nipple and the bottom of the rib cage, locate the Spleen meridian tapping points about 2″ above the bottom of the rib cage.  Or, trace from these points to alternate points found at the sides of the ribcage in line with the armpits.

Mindful Focus:

I adapt with ease

I embrace change with grace

I return to balance effortlessly

I’m at home in every place

I’m in love with my life, and Life Is Good.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Stomach Meridian Points
Awareness: The Stomach Meridian embodies the Yang aspect of the Earth Element, and traverses the body from the face down to the feet, supplying one of our strongest grounding forces.  When we are well-grounded, we naturally move from chronic worry towards trust in the process of life.
Practice: Find these points on the cheekbones about 2″ below the center of the eyes.  With first and second fingers together, tap firmly so the fingertips bounce.
Mindful Focus:
My roots reach deeply into the Earth,
Carrying away worry,
Bringing me home to trust the journey of my life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Four Thumps can be done any time, and are a great way to begin any other energy work, including a daily self-care practice.  I feel more dimensions of effect when I put my heart into the words, instead of simply reciting them – speaking from that place within me where all this is already absolutely true.  I change the wording of my Mindful Focus verses whenever feel like it, and I encourage you to write your own (if you like adding affirmations too), using words that are most meaningful to you.

Warmly,  Lyn

To Begin the World Again – Mindfulness with the Daily Energy Routine

Each morning brings a new world into the light.  Nothing is exactly the same as the moment before.  When I greet my morning with a mindful practice of Eden Energy Medicine exercises, I feel more anchored in the moment, more able to respond with equanimity to life around me and within me.

   ToBeginTheWorldAgain
Emergence and the Heart of the Flame – Collage/Painting by Lyn Milum

We have it in our power to begin the world again.  – Thomas Paine

Donna Eden teaches a simple and powerful Daily Energy Routine, a set of exercises that resets our energetic balance.  It takes less than ten minutes a day.  I’ve done these Energy Balancing exercises with my mind on things-to-do, on conversations, or just wandering around in its busyness.  Doing the routine that way still feels effective in bringing harmony to my energy systems, but I feel more deeply nourished in myself when I bring my mind into the multidimensional wonder of each energy portal on my body as I communicate with it, the grace of each resonant energy system.

A recent post by Jane Lesher in Barbara Ann O’Leary‘s Making Eden Energy Medicine Our Own project, Nourishing the Heart, motivates me to share some ways I bring mindfulness to my Daily Eden Energy Medicine practice.  Jane not only provides how to do energy exercises for the heart, but offers an intention to hold in mind while doing them.  A while back, inspired by Susan Shanley‘s Meridian Tracing Affirmations, I began to think about the energy communications in each piece of the Daily Energy Routine, and crafted images and words to focus on while doing each part.  Each exercise awakens and harmonizes at least one energy system, and each meridian and all the energy systems have themes, characteristics, and gifts that can be tuned in to.

This post introduces a series where I’ll be sharing individual parts of a Mindful Energy Balancing Practice that has grown out of Donna’s Daily Energy Routine.   I see each person as an individual “world,” complete with earthy flesh, fluid living seas, and rhythmic flows of air.  We have an auric field atmosphere, and a fiery center.  Simple energy balancing practices have profound reverberations throughout our entire system.  In each moment, we can shift towards greater integrity and harmony, and begin our world again.

Warmly,  Lyn
