When I enter an Eden Energy Medicine session with a client, I “hold the space” for them by intending that we are safely guided from wherever we begin, through whatever processes are emerging to serve their life force, towards their greater ease in experiencing more of their true selves in their lives. I “hold time” for them as well, dedicating the moments we have solely to their process. It is a sacred time-out from daily life, to drop into the timelessness of the original self. It is their time, and I am there as an agent for their healing force.
When my mind becomes restless and noisy, it takes me away from holding space and time for my client, and the quality of Presence is dimmed. Whether I wander into mental review of a technique I might offer next, or I drift into thinking about some other aspect of my life, I find that when my focus is not with my client the work has less amplitude and loses some of its flow. The more I can remain in a simple state of authentic presence, the better I feel I can facilitate energetic balance, communication, and the self-healing mechanisms of their inner physician.
Over time, different ways to return to my quiet center during an Eden Energy Medicine session have arisen for me.
1. Listening with My Body.
Sometimes when I feel my mind interrupting the practice of being clear and present, I relax into my breath, and “listen” with my hands and my “gut.” My primary sensory processing type is “tonal” or “auditory,” and tuning in to the vibrations meeting my fingertips or my solar plexus is like listening to music, and it draws the focus of energy away from my thinking mind.
2. Painting with Light.
During a long, usually quiet process like chakra clearing, there are frequencies coming up from the body to express and be released. Even when I’m tuning in to them though, I have found my mind becoming restless. I began to imagine luminous spheres, tracing through Central and Governing meridians, and then I used them to paint light through the meridian flow wheel (which originated in Traditional Chinese Medicine), beginning with the meridian that is at its high tide for that time of day. This image is vibrant and colorful, and I can feel the light increasing through the body’s energy field as each meridian is illuminated in its turn. When I am painting with light, I am not being caught in a whirlwind of thinking.
3. Breathing Love Through the Heart.
When someone experiences an emotional release as I work with them, I feel it is essential to hold the space with even greater strength as they move through that vulnerable time. It helps me if I telescope out into a wider perspective than their emotional state. At an Advanced Energy Medicine for Women class in Miami, Donna Eden showed us the healing power of sending love through our heart chakras to another person. This idea blossomed into what I’ve begun calling, “breathing love through the heart.” I inhale light from the sky and the earth to meet in my heart, and I exhale that love through my heartspace to enfold the other, as my hands are holding therapeutic points on the body, or continuing with other work. I don’t send any agenda, or even a wish that they might move more quickly through the emotion. It is beyond the love I can generate on my own; it feels like I’ve stepped into a current that flows wherever I am.
A sort of meditation has found me through this work, and I love the fluidity it takes, and the way it soothes the discomfort of my over-thinking. This sort of focused attention during a session is helping me learn to be more present, in the treatment room, and in other parts of my life.
